Shop around for composite planters in Vietnam and you will keep hearing the word “fiberstone” — a composite planter blended with stone powder. Many people assume that less stone powder and a lighter pot means better quality. In reality, for planters that live outdoors in Vietnam’s sun and rain, the stone powder is what makes the planter solid. This guide explains what fiberstone is, how it overcomes the weaknesses of traditional terrazzo planters, and how to tell good fiberstone from poor fiberstone.
What is a fiberstone planter?
“Composite” is the general name for materials made by combining several components. A fiberstone planter is cast from three of them:
- High-grade polyester resin as the binder.
- Fiberglass reinforcement, which makes the walls tough and able to carry load.
- Stone powder blended into the core, which makes the walls rigid and dense, with a natural stone-like surface.
The three work together: the fiberglass keeps the planter from being brittle, and the stone powder keeps it rigid and stable.

Advantages of fiberstone planters
- Rigid and solid: the stone powder in the core keeps the walls firm, so they do not dent or deform when filled with soil and planted with large plants.
- Stable outdoors: the planter has a reassuring heft, so it stays put with tall plants in windy spots such as balconies and rooftops.
- Natural stone texture: a good match for gardens, landscaping and building lobbies.
- Reasonable price: a planter made of resin and fiberglass alone needs more of those expensive materials to reach the same rigidity, so it costs more. Fiberstone gives solid strength at a sensible cost.
- Long-lasting color: holds its color well outdoors over time.
- Waterproof-coated interior: Furnio planters are coated inside, so irrigation water and damp soil do not seep through or stain floors.
Overcoming the weaknesses of traditional terrazzo planters
Traditional terrazzo planters are cast from cement mixed with stone chips, then ground and polished — beautiful and elegant, but with three big drawbacks. Fiberstone keeps the stone look while solving all three:
| Traditional terrazzo | Fiberstone composite | |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | Very heavy, hard to transport and lift, puts a big load on floors | Much lighter, easy to bring up to balconies and rooftops |
| Color | Fades over time outdoors | Keeps its color |
| Toughness | Cracks or chips easily when knocked or moved | Fiberglass reinforcement plus stone powder: rigid and crack-resistant |
Furnio started out as a terrazzo workshop, so we know these drawbacks first-hand — and moved to fiberstone composite to keep the beauty of stone without the weight and brittleness.
Good fiberstone vs. poor fiberstone
All fiberstone planters contain stone powder, but quality depends on the mix ratio and the quality of the resin and fiberglass. Very cheap planters often use low-grade resin, too little fiberglass and too much stone powder, sometimes even a foam or cement core. These tend to peel and crack once exposed to sun and rain.
- Check the rim and the inside: a good planter has a clean rim and even walls, with no foam core showing.
- Check the finish: the paint or stone texture is even, with no pinholes or peeling.
- Ask how it is made: is it reinforced with fiberglass, or just resin mixed with stone powder?
- For larger orders, ask to see a real sample before you commit.
When should you choose fiberstone?
- Planters placed outdoors: gardens, balconies, rooftops, building entrances.
- Tall plants with large canopies that need a stable planter.
- Projects that need many planters that last, at a reasonable cost.
If the planter goes on an upper-floor balcony or rooftop, remember to account for the weight of soil and irrigation water as well as the planter itself.
